Thank You, Marcus Lattimore
February 3rd, 2010 is the day the Gamecock football program changed forever for the better. Many fans believe the red letter day for South Carolina was the day Coach Spurrier took the head coaching job, but it was actually a few years later when the real change happened. Coach Spurier has certainly been one of the driving forces for the upswing of Gamecock football, but history will look back to that winter day in 2010, when a young Marcus Lattimore put on that Gamecock baseball cap and announced he was going to be a Gamecock. No other player has had the impact of Marcus Lattimore. In the movie Remember the Titans, Julius tells Gary that attitude reflects leadership. The day Marcus Lattimore stepped on campus this became obvious for the Gamecocks. I've heard from someone close to the program that Marcus Lattimore would show up at 5:45 a.m. and run the punishment with his teammates who missed breakfast check or study hall. Sometimes this punishment included running the entire Williams Brice stadium steps. Picture at one of the punishments, a teammate of Lattimore's looking at Marcus and saying,
And Lattimore replying,
"You didn't miss anything, why are you here?"
In all my years of playing, coaching, or watching athletics, I cannot think of a better example of leadership. (Or a better explanation of why Lattimore was capable of 40 carries in an SEC football game!) Marcus Lattimore is the single most influential force in South Carolina football history.
"Because you're here."
Lattimore reminds me of two leaders. One is from the Bible and one is from the movies. Those two leaders are Moses, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Lattimore led the Gamecock football nation out of a century of mediocrity. But like Moses, for reasons hard to comprehend, Lattimore himself may not actually be able to enter the Promised Land with the rest of his team. Gamecocks have certainly wandered in the desert for more than 40 years, but behind the unbelievable leadership of Lattimore have gotten to the door step of the Promised Land. As cliche and common as this sounds for a Gamecock fan to say, next year's schedule and returning roster lends itself to big things.
At the time of the publishing of this article, no official report has been given to the severity of Lattimore's injury, so it is not possible to conclude what the future holds for him. All I know is, he was the back bone of the largest culture change in college football history. South Carolina went from being a bottom dweller cast aside by the national media to being a yearly top ten program, all on the coat tails of the leadership of Marcus Lattimore.
He is also like Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars. Obi-Wan delivers a famous line near the end of Star Wars, which is paraphrased as,
I truly believe Marcus Lattimore's leadership is so powerful that it could prove to be more potently effective to the current team and future teams if he is somehow not able to play.
"If you strike me down I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine."
The future of the Gamecock football program was strengthened the day Marcus Lattimore decided to play for the university. It may be part of the larger master plan for this young man to strengthen the program even more by not being able to play. I believe he will provide a lasting foundation at the university by inspiring a generation of young players to actually stay home and play for the Gamecocks.
Every Gamecock fan thought Lattimore's influence would be made by having a long and successful NFL career. And, of course, we all pray that this still happens. But if it doesn't, I truly believe Lattimore's influence on the future of Gamecock football will still be vast.
There are young boys all over the state of South Carolina who woke up this morning hearing stories about Marcus Lattimore. They are all hoping to one day make an impact on Gamecock football just like Marcus has and just like he will.
I pray that Marcus is able to play again and play fantastically. But if he's not, I want him to know what he has meant to this Gamecock fan. His leadership has been second to none. He has helped the Gamecock football program rise from the ashes like the phoenix. He has made every kid in South Carolina playing backyard football who has ever had fleeting thoughts about the Gamecock football program to conclude immediately that they want to go to South Carolina.
While Marcus may not actually get to enter the Promised Land when the Gamecocks go there, I want Marcus to truly realize, that every Gamecock fan across the world knows that it was his hand we held as he pulled us, it was his heart that guided us, and it was his feet that took us there. Every player and every fan simply followed their leader, Marcus Lattimore, to the door step of the Promised Land. We will be forever grateful.
February 3rd, 2010, Lattimore committed to South Carolina and changed the program forever. October 27th, 2012, Lattimore was stricken down by this awful injury. October 28th, 2012, I began looking forward to watching Lattimore become "more powerful than I can possibly imagine."
It is with a prayerful heart, and a joyful spirit that I sincerely say thank you to Marcus Lattimore for all he's done for the Gamecocks. I am currently looking forward to fighting the lump in my throat while watching an ESPN, 30 for 30 production 12 years from now recapping all the influence Marcus Lattimore had during his time at South Carolina and in the NFL.
I believe we as Gamecock fans should randomly show up during Lattimore's rehab workouts and cheer for him. When he says,
We simply respond,
"You don't need rehab, why are you here?"
Go Gamecocks. Go Marcus. We love you.
"Because you're here, Marcus..."
[ I invite you to leave any message for Marcus telling him what his leadership has meant to you over the years by posting a comment below. ]
Marty, this is awesome. Thank you for writing this. Marcus, we love you. We pray for you. We are here for you. Your hard work and dedication will take you far.
ReplyDeleteWell done Marty
ReplyDeleteAwesome post Marty. I enjoy listening to you on Cory's show during the week. Excellent perspective on Lattimore!
ReplyDeleteMarcus,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I pray God's blessings in your life in football and beyond. Marty is right... USC football changed forever for the good when you signed in Feb 2010. You are an amazing football player, but you are much more than that to GamecockNation. You put us on the map and then heavily recruited your friends to come and be a part of something very special here. I pray right now in the name of Jesus that your knee will be completely healed and you can continue your dream of playing football your senior year as a Gamecock and many years in the NFL. I have to admit that I cried like a baby when I saw your injury happen on TV. It was not a pretty sight, but you handled it with such poise and then pumped up your teammates as you were carted off the field. I want you to know that my son idolizes you and that makes me proud as a dad. You are one special individual and I wish nothing but the best for you in the future. Jeremiah 29:11 is my life verse. "For I know the plans for you says The Lord, plans to prosper you and provide hope for the future and not to harm you." Stay strong Marcus. I know you will. You are forever in our thoughts, prayers, and hearts. My pumpkin is carved with the #21 in honor if you. Go Cocks!!! Go ML!!! With much respect and love. The Beckwith family, Lexington, SC
Thank you, Marty. That was eloquently said and so true. And to Marcus....Everything that I might say to you personally has already been said in the past 24 hours. So I might simply say, I know that you have and will continue to make us all proud in how you will handle this obstacle. May God continue to bless you and use you as His instrument to show His grace and healing power.
ReplyDeleteMarty, from a Die Hard Clemson girl - this is one of the most beautiful and touching pieces I have ever read!! My heart was broken for Marcus and his family as I watched it all unfold on TV yesterday. Moments like this transcend any rivalry and Tiger Nation is sending lots of love, support and prayers for Marcus and his family. I have never been more proud of fans from so many teams, most especially Clemson and Carolina fans for coming together as one team to show support for such an outstanding young man. So much goodwill was shared yesterday from so many people - what a remarkable testimony to the high regard and respect for Marcus as a player and young man!! Amazing job on this post Marty - I was very touched!!
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say that ever since this injury happened all I've thought about is Marcus -- obsessively. I'm a Vol fan but most of Volnation knows what a great man Marcus is, not just a great player but a great man, and we hope he gets well soon. Never in my life have I been so torn up over a play but ML is an inspiration beyond Gamecock Country and seeing the raw emotion he displayed, how the teams came together, is a testament to what a great guy he is. Get well soon Marcus!
ReplyDeleteMarcus,
ReplyDeleteYou will always be loved and admired by Gamecock Nation. It is comforting to my entire family that so many people share the same appreciation and feelings that we have for you. Your character, leadership and humility for a man with your gifts are at a level I have never before seen.
Much love and appreciation for all of your contribution and sacrifice. Please know we will never, ever forget and will always be there for you.
Wow, great read
ReplyDeleteMarcus our prayers are with you for rapid recovery. You have made such an impact on this State, and the real USC. Everyone that comes to USC to play football will look to you as a role model and for inspiration. Thank you for all of the Saturdays you have given and will give me of yelling for you to score! Hail to thee Carolina Class of 1982 Jesse Belue. God's speed Marcus on your recovery !
ReplyDeleteThank you for elegantly expresssing our thoughts. Best of luck and all things in your recovery Marcus Lattimore.I look forward to the time when I can say I graduated from the same school as Marcus Lattimore ( only in 1976), Forever to thee!
ReplyDeleteMarcus you have been in our thoughts and prayers and will continue to be. You are such an inspiration not only to young boys but to everyone of all ages. I have never been able to run a whole 5K (have to walk at some point) but Thanksgiving day I will be wearing number 21 and I will run the whole way to honor you. Failure will not be an option. Stay strong young man you have an entire Gamecock nation behind you. Lots of love and wishes for a full and complete recovery!
ReplyDeleteGod Bless you, Marcus.I have been a Gamecock Club member for 42 yrs, & you are the most special young man I have had the pleasure to watch. God has special plans for you, Marcus. Keep the Faith. This to shall pass. May God hold you in the palm of His Hands.
ReplyDeletePraying for you to have a speedy recovery! Thank you for everything you have done for Gamecock Nation and all of your wonderful influence on our younger society"!!
DeleteWell said - Marcus we will never let you down! Go Gamecocks!
ReplyDeleteDang. Crying again, Marty. What a wonderful tribute to a young man who defies adjectival description.
ReplyDeleteI have prayed so hard for him yesterday and again today to be comforted and know we are behind him and to accept the future with the way he has led this team.
Marty this is awesome!! It brought tears to my eyes!! I have thought about Marcus and his family all day!! Marcus stay strong and keep the faith! Thank u for what you have brought to the Gamecock nation!! You are what every athlete should be, on and off the field!
ReplyDeleteWonderful article about a superior young man!!
ReplyDeleteMarcus,
You were a kind, sweet, caring child when you came through Berry Shoals Intermediate School and you only grew to be that and more as a young adult! I love watching how you let God use you to be a witness for others. HE has something wonderful in store for your future and I look forward to watching it play out. You will be in my prayers and I know something good will come of this.
In HIS Love,
Jackie
Marcus:
ReplyDeleteWe watched with a lump in our throats and tears in our eyes when you were injured. You are such an inspiration to everyone with your attitude and work ethic. We hope and pray that you will heal and be stronger than ever. You are the BEST!

Marcus,
ReplyDeleteThe one thing that a man will always have, rather good or bad, is his character.... You my man, are an example to all..... Prayers to you for a speedy recovery!
Marcus,
ReplyDeleteYou recently said you want to be remembered as the greatest leader that USC has ever had. I want you to know that you already are. Everything you have done has proven your faithfulness, courage, and loyalty, to your God and to your convictions. I am fully confident that Yahweh will use your determination and you character as a testimony of what he can do and how he rewards those who stand strong in their faith in Him. Just know, you have made Him, and all of us, so proud.
I look forward to telling my grandkids one day about the greatest leader USC ever had and about the many ways God used him to touch others.
I pray that every day for you will be better than the last. Best wishes on this day, your birthday, and everyday.
Nate Lee

Marcus there is no doubt in my mind that whatever gods plan for you is it will be fulfilled. You are an inspiration to millions. I hugged your sister after your 212 yard game against the Gators in 2010. As I tried to tell her how much I loved you and how special you are I choked up and cried...all 46 years old 275 pounds of me. She just held me and said "I know". I have had those same tears since Saturday afternoon because I never want Lattimore time to be over. The Gamecock Nation and I love you man. God bless and stay strong!
ReplyDeleteSimply a wonderful and heartfelt tribute. In today’s world where there are few good role models, it is refreshing to see the positive impact an individual can have. Marcus has always demonstrated humility, leadership, and unparalleled sportsmanship. He truly lives his faith, values his education, and realizes that his athletic ability is only part of who he is. So Marcus, thank you for being you. Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.
ReplyDeleteGreat article and it really touched my heart. I have shed tears over Marcus as well but they turned from sadness to tears of pride. As a life long Rebel I was lucky enough to see most of his games in high school so I was so excited when Marcus chose to be a Gamecock. Then he actually got here and proceeded to exceed my wildest dreams of what he would mean to the university, community, and college football. I truly believe God will heal this fine young man and prosper him greatly! Prayers to a full recovery Marcus in Jesus name amen.
ReplyDeleteI wish I was half the person that Marcus Lattimore is. It's not often somebody looks up to someone younger than them but Marcus is not only my favorite football player but my role model. He's without a doubt the best runningback in college football and has been but he's never once bragged about it or has anything but encouraging words and sportsmanship for the defenses he rips apart. He's done so much for this program and I would to see number 21 run out that tunnel through that fog while 2001 is playing and continue his dream playing football. We can never thank you enough for what you've done for this program. We love you Marcus get well soon! Forever to thee...
ReplyDeleteThe impact Marcus has had and will continue to have on Gamecock football is above anything we can fully understand. To say he is a special young man is an understatement. It takes a man of great character to face the challenges he has and come out stronger than he was before. He will do it again. We love you Marcus and will pray for you as you work through this hurdle. I cannot wait to see how God is going to use you. I am a Marcus Lattimore fan for life.
ReplyDeleteOften when thinks seem unsurmountable, thats just when God does His most awesome work in our lives. Praying.
ReplyDeleteGet well soon Marcus! We are so proud of you here in Rebel nation. You are an amazing young man & no matter what your decisions are at this point I know & know you know God has big plans for you. Stay strong. Pray hard. Persevere. With God ALL things are possible! We love you! You're a hometown hero not because of the football you play but because of the amazing example you set! May God continue to bless you!
ReplyDeletewell done marty...marcus,i hope and pray for you a complete recovery, and that this does'nt stop you from your dream or your full potential...and i hope you realize what an impact you have had on college football..not just for usc,but the whole nation...god bless you, young man...keep your head up,you have your whole life ahead of you and already have the love and respect from every decent football fan in america
ReplyDeleteMarcus my family will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Keep your head up and get yourself through this. Remember God has a plan for everything!
ReplyDeleteMarcus, I will never know if I was good enough to play BCS level football. I sustained sustained serious injuries from playing sports, but mostly from outside of sports and my high school career was plagued with questions of could I / would I return. I did continue to play throughout my high school career, eventually lettering in three different sports with two state championships and many conference championships. The things of life that happen to many happened to me and I never allowed myself the opportunity to see if I could make it. Now I live vicariously through the accomplishments of my beloved University of South Carolina, a school that accepted me, but one to which I never took the chance to attend. My regrets are many, but the successes that our fine university have made atheletically of late have heightened my resolve to challenge the young people around me, be they young people I coach, employ, or parent, to step up and take their shot and give it their all. You, young sir, are one of the very best things to ever happen to this state and the University of South Carolina. I will never forget your breakout game against the University of Georgia. I thought even then that you would make a difference, but even with that wild success of a game I had no idea the renewed spirit you would bring to our school and state, a pride we had never known. But I want you to know that you are even so much more than that, you are much more than the one who woke the sleeping giant that the University of South Carolina was, you, sir, are a testament to the promises of God. You, through your character and resolve, lead many and have garnered their respect and love. I am one of those many. You are more loved than you may ever know, but you are also much more special than you may ever know, a true blessing from God. While it is my wish to see you take that field again at Williams-Brice, it is much more my wish that you continue to be a man of character, a man of God. That is what makes the difference. Godspeed young sir, I wish you a speedy recovery and a very happy Birthday. Always know that you are loved, Forever to thee!
ReplyDeleteMarty, you hit it right on!
ReplyDeleteFrom someone that's more than twice Marcus' age, it's quite amazing that that this young man has made me want to be a better person. Know that our thoughts and prayers are with you, and know that God will lift you up.
Marty,
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beautifully written and yes this young man will continue to make an impact on our university and more importantly, God still has a plan for him and no doubt he will make an even larger impact on the Kingdom of God!
Just read this tribute of Marcus to my wife and we both teared up! Very well written and know that Marcus will continue to impact the gamecock nation for many years to come. He is the ultimate leader and so blessed he is a gamecock forever! My 5 year old came out of Sunday school this am and I asked him what he did and he stated the he prayed for the gamecock football player that hurt his leg. Only Marcus could have that kind of impact on a five year old - amazing!
ReplyDeleteI did not know this story and I love your post. Marcus is incredible. I went to Byrnes High School as well although it was many years before Marcus and I have seen the impact he had both in high school and in college not just on his teammates but the fans and his community. Marcus has taught us so much at just 21. He's a true leader and an admirable person.
ReplyDeleteIt is very rare that someone that you have never actually met or talked to would have such an impact on your life. We are not hurt because of what Marcus meant on the field, we are hurt because of what he means in our heart. It is heartbreaking to see a guy work so hard and give all he has to make his dreams come true for he and his family and then to see that look in his eyes. You could almost see his heart in his eyes at that moment. He has meant more to the program than just a good running back. He has been a role model for all of us, young and old. When you see grown men cry over a football player getting hurt in a game that we all understand injury could happen, then you have seen how much that young man has affected us all. Being a leader is putting everyone in front of you but also being in front of everyone. Thank you for all that you have done. If God blesses you and allows you a chance at football again, go Pro, live your dream, we will understand, for you have done more for us already than we could ever do for you.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't say it better. We feel for his injury, but it goes so much deeper. It is the injury of his dreams, his love, his passion. We will continue to pray for his recovery and for the fulfillment of God's plan for him. God bless you, Marcus Lattimore. We love you and all you have accomplished for the Gamecock Nation!
DeleteThanks, Marty, for this wonderful tribute to Marcus. Your grandfather was a good friend of my dad and my middle school principal, and I know that he is looking down on you with pride.
ReplyDeleteMarcus, it breaks my heart to know that you have to face this again. But I also know that you are incredibly strong, physically, mentally and spiritually. You will get through this. Please know that you will have the love and support of all of Gamecock Nation behind you every step of the way.
Mary Fant
Marcus, As a former teacher at Byrnes (I taught Coach Glenn, went to college with Coach Miller and consider the Bentleys a part of my family) and still and forever a Rebel fan, I have so enjoyed watching you for the past seven years on the gridiron. I only got to meet you once at the 50 yard line after a Rebel win at Nixon field, but I knew then from your attention to the Rebel faithful of your character. My prayers go out to you and your family at this time and know that the Lord continues to have a plan for your life.
ReplyDeleteSincerely, Edith Jordan
Marcus you have been in my thoughts and prayers ever since the terrible moment you were lying on the ground. The lesson in church today was of the blind man Jesus restored sight to...it is my heartfelt wish that Jesus say to you the same as he did to him because I know your heart is of a true and faithful servant...." go forth...your faith has healed you"...
ReplyDeleteWow, Marty. Eloquently said and heartfelt. I'm right there with ya. Was in 307 that dreary Oct. day. The day Williams Brice wept.
ReplyDeleteMarcus, I lit a candle for you today and asked God to heal you. I asked the Blessed Lady to pray for you as well. You are a shining example for our youth and I know you will get recover from this setback and be better than before. God bless you and your family and I will continue to pray for you.
ReplyDelete"Just watched the video again of the day you committed to THE USC. It was the day USC football changed forever. The contributions you have made with your athletic ability are huge but pale in comparison to the impact you have made and will make off the field of play. You have made us proud to be Gamecocks Marcus with the way you carry yourself with class and a humbleness not always seen today in athletics. You are the role model that our kids need and as a father of three I thank you. I guess the only thing that comforts your fans is the realization that God has a plan for you that is bigger and better than any of us can fathom at this time. We will continue to pray for you and your family during your recovery. I pray that God will give you comfort and know you have the full support of Gamecock Nation."
ReplyDeleteWow!! what a wonderful and true post. Marcus Lattimore, you are an inspiration. Life isn't always what we think it's going to be, but with God- it can be so much more than we thought it would be. Keep your faith and your eyes foused on Him. He never said it would be easy but that He would carry you each step of the way. God will use this for His glory, though you may not see it now or understand it, but just wait... you are amazing! May God bless you, your family, and your recovery.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't have said it better. I don't think Marcus knows the impact he has made in Gamecock fans and even people outside the Gamecock Nation's lives. His character speaks volumes as well as his talent on the field. Marcus has been brought up in a home where he was loved and nurtured and they loved the Lord. As a mother I know his mother is more proud of what he has brought to people by his love of God and family than what he has done on the field. We should give praise to Marcus's mother for rasing her son to be a man of integrity and honor. My prayers are with Marcus and his family, they know that no matter where this takes Marcus that God is in control and they will honor that. God speed Marcus.
ReplyDeleteYou're the best, Latt.
ReplyDeleteWe love you and are so very proud of who you are.
God bless.
Randy Tucker Family/Chesnee,SC The support for you has been so heart warming. You may ask yourself "WHY" for me? Because, you have touched our lives and hearts. The way you carry yourself, your true humbled spirit, your manners. Today our family has prayed for you, as well as your Mother. God please help her! We know what it is like to watch your young son play the game of football. Some good comes from this great game, and some bad. We pray that you continue to work hard, lean on God now more that ever before. Do not be disappointed in yourself, hold your head high everyday, for you have played for... and are still... a South Carolina Gamecock, and you are OUR... MARCUS LATTIMORE.
ReplyDeleteMarcus feel free to call on me for cause you will never have to go through this alone. Here's a quote "You're the best around, nothings gonna keep you down"
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for giving your equally heartfelt messages! Gamecock Nation is the best. Go Marcus! Go Cocks!
ReplyDeleteMarcus -
ReplyDeleteI've been dubbed as the biggest and out spoken Clemson fan. I'm suppose to hate anything garnet and if its anything "Gamecock" I might as well burn it. Wearing orange tinted sunglasses does make me bias more times than not. However, sometimes someone's character shines through the orange and makes me see who they really are. There's a reason why I haven't made jokes about you, or made fun of something you said or did. It's because I know who you really are and what type of player you are. Sure, we haven't met, we probably will never meet but that doesn't mean I don't hear things from people who know you and commend you on your character. I enjoyed watching you run the ball, you ran with such authority and determination, it was almost funny how defenders would shy away from straight tackles. Watching you go down against UT was rough for me, I liked you as a player and knew how hard you worked after the first injury. I immediately took to twitter and and asked for prayers for you. My iphone actually reset itself from the amount of retweets and comments back. Upon hearing that you have the possibility of returning next year or the year after proves that God was listening to this Clemson fans prayers and the rest of Clemson. We might not root for you the Saturday after Thanksgiving but don't think we don't care about you as a person. I hope you come back 200% better, rush for 200 yards a game, win the Heisman, and win every game but 1. I'll continue praying for you and wish you all the best.
Stay Pawsome.
Clemson Tom
I am a huge Gamecock fan, and I have been crying off and on all day. Not because the Gamecocks will have to move on without one of the greatest players in college history. The Gamecocks will move on and we'll all be fine eventually. But I'm crying because this had to happen to one of the greatest young men to ever hit the field, any field. This is breaking my heart. I just hope that he is rewarded 10-fold for his contribution to the game, to the Gamecocks and to everyone who loves football. And Marty you are right. No one else could have brought rival teams together to pray and console Marcus, his family and the Gamecock Nation. My daughter is a senior at Carolina, and I can tell you she was extremely touched by the prayers pouring in from Clemson fans. Marcus is one of a kind and truly a national treasure! We love you Marcus and wish that this somehow brings you the rewards that you so deserve!
ReplyDeleteMarcus, I couldn't love you any more if you were own son. You belong to all of us, and I hope now, more than ever, you are feeling the love in ways that you never imagined.
ReplyDeleteThough I enjoy your prowess in football, it is not your greatest gift. Your greatest gift is your ability to use football as a vehicle to shine a light on how integrity, humility, character, determination, and selflessness are the true characteristics that define a real man -- not the swag and bluster that so many other young men employ.
You are the embodiment of God's love, and I know that you make Him and us mere mortals so proud each and every day. Thank you for being such an inspiration to me and many, many others, even during your darkest times and toughest challenges. We love you!
#21 Forever to Thee! Gamecock Nation will cheer you on through your recovery just as hard as we cheer for you on the field. GO MARCUS
ReplyDeleteThis is such a touching read! From the Byrnes Rebel #21 to the Gamecocks #21, Marcus has always been an all around great young man. When Marcus played for Byrnes, my little cousin, Matt who was 3 or 4 absolutely loved Marcus. Matt was kind of shy about meeting new people and most of the time would hide behind someone he was close to until my Mom and Aunt took him out on the field so he could meet Marcus. Mom asked Marcus if Matt could have his picture taken with him and Marcus said "Sure"! Marcus scooped Matt up into his arms and Matt was grinning from ear to ear...not shy at all with Marcus! Not many high school students would take the time do that for a little kid. My Mom had an eight by ten picture made, framed it and gave it to Matt. Matt carried that picture with him everywhere and he slept with it. He wanted everyone to see that he had his picture taken with Marcus Lattimore and still has it hanging on his wall in his bedroom. When Marcus started playing for Gamecocks, Matt would always say I'm Gamecock #21...I'm Marcus. Saturday, October 27th, was Matt's first Gamecock game and when Marcus was hurt, Matt started crying. Mom told him that she would get a card for Matt to take his class at school to sign and they would mail Marcus a get well card. That was the only way we could get him to stop crying. Marcus was an inspirational leader then, he is now, and always will be! We love you Marcus and lift you up in healing prayers! Thank you for your humble spirit, your dedication to our Lord and Savior, to your family, team mates, and Gamecock Nation! God speed healing Marcus!

Marcus it is times like these we see what we are made of. As great a football player as you are GOD has giving you something even greater. You are a natural born leader. I once read, how do you know if you are a leader??? Turn around and see if anyone is following. Young man, I have never seen the out pouring of emotion and response as I have with you. Even tonight at the end of the NFL game they gave a shout out. Happy Birthday and God Bless You!
ReplyDeleteWarren from Columbia.
Marcus is in the prayers of sports fan everywhere around the nation. I'm a huge Georgia fan, but I have the utmost respect for Marcus. I hope to see him out there playing again soon, and maybe carrying the ball on Sundays for the Panthers in the near future.

ReplyDeleteOut of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

May GOD continue to shine his light on the paths you blaze. Be Strong!
Marty you hit the walk off homerun, kicked the winning FG and shot the buzzer beater.
ReplyDeleteMarcus,
When we the Gamecock fans and your teammates needed you, you shouldered the burden and led us. Now its our time to do the same for you. Know without a doubt in your heart that the entire Gamecock Nation is behind you, supporting you and praying with you as well as praying for you.
Ok, I'm a guy and I never cry, but I'm shedding big time tears right now. Marcus, we'll be there for you. I was crushed when I saw you on the ground, not for our team, not for me, but for you and your family. I don't know you, but I do know that you are one heck of a person, and things like this just aren't fair, and as we all know, life isn't fair sometimes. I agree with Marty and others, whatever you decide to do, you will accomplish big things and will continue to influence others. That's what it's all about. Praying hard for you because "you're here."
ReplyDeleteMarty, fantastic article.

ReplyDeleteVery touching story.... Marcus, I'd always heard what an outstanding young man you are, on and off the field, but now I can truly see it. I've never seen such an outpouring of love, prayers, and respect. This speaks volumes to your character. I, too, was at Williams Brice Saturday and witnessed that horrific play. I cried as if you were one of my own down on that field. My son is a freshman at Carolina and looks up to you so much as do so many others. You are truly a role model for young and old alike and our prayers continue to be with you and your family.... God has big plans for you!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great article,Marty.Marcus, best of luck to you .This 62 year old Gamecock fan hopes his sons grow to be fine men like you are.I know you'll hang tough like you always have.God bless and keep you.To the rest of the football world,"HE"LL BE BACK!!!"

As a 25 year old Georgia Bulldog fan I would just like to say; Marcus Lattimore you are one amazing kid. You are and will always be a shining example of an exemplary student athelete. Your are one of the finest young men I have seen in college football in a while. I cannot thank you enough for the pleasure of watching your carry the football and cannot wait to see you back on the field. Stay strong, have faith, and know that the entire college football nation is behind you. Happy Birthday and Get well soon.
ReplyDeleteTruly the best article I have ever read! Marcus is the reason my boys play backyard ball. My sons dream of playing at Carolina. Our family, like the rest of Gamecock Nation, knows that God has a plan and Marcus will be healed. Happy 21st Latti. We do love you and all you stand for. :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you Marty for being able to put into words what all Gamecocks are thinking and feeling.
ReplyDeleteMarcus, I wish you a speedy recovery. You deserve the best from life and you will be in my prayers. If anyone can find the best in situations, it is you. Keep the Gamecocks going! You may not be playing the rest of the season, but you are just as powerful off the field as you are on the field. That's what makes you the best Gamecock of All Time!
Robbie & family October 29, 2012 AM
ReplyDeleteMarcus, I and my family have followed your career. We wish the best for you with your recovery. Your faith is such a positive influence on the youth, you have gone out on visits all over the state of South Carolina and talked about your faith this is such a refreshing thing in such a nice young adult that has a busy schedule with school and football. Your star will shine for many years to come thank you for your impact on the Gamecock
nation My son and I attended the game Saturday I cried for the rest of the game. Stay strong in your faith, my best wishes for your recovery and for your family as well. God Bless
Great job Marty. I'm a die-hard Clemson fan, but I have more respect for Marcus than most boys on our team. He is truly one of the greatest players to have ever stepped onto Death Valley's grass(and Willy Brice's for that matter). I wish this young man a speedy and successful recovery, as well as a bright and prosperous career, whatever that career might be.
ReplyDeleteVERY WELL WRITTEN. I have been a Gamecock all of my life and have been heavily involved at USC as either a student or employee since 1986. I can honestly say that I don't think I have ever seen more love for one player than we see for Marcus right now. The depth of love that is felt for him by so many people that have probably never physically had contact with this young man is because of his character more than his playing ability. I don't think there is a person that knows of Marcus that wouldn't want him to be a mentor to their own sons. I know I am one of those people. I pray that the support and love that he receives from the Gamecock Nation and the rest of the world will help carry him to a full recovery. May God be with him and his family and may the Gamecocok Nation continue to hold him in their hearts and prayers throughout his difficult and challenging rehab process.
ReplyDeleteMarcus,
ReplyDeleteYou are an incredible young man and a role model to so many. The way you persevered through the first injury showed what an amazing drive that you have. I am sure that you will go far in whatever you do. We as a Gamecock nation are behind you 100% in whatever path that you choose to take. May God be with you on your road to recovery!
As a 30 year Georgia fan, I find this to be GREAT testimony to a fine young man.
ReplyDeleteMarcus... even WE ALL were on the field with the Gamecock Nation on Saturday. Everyone's looking forward to your strong recovery and continued inspiration on and off the field.
Marcus,
ReplyDeleteThe one thing that I have always noticed about you is that it has NEVER been about YOU. It has always been about the team and the USC. You are such a great ambassador for this University. You have ALWAYS done things the right way. I pray that my kids grow up to be half the person you are. We don't always understand WHY but God has a plan for you. I truly believe great things are in your future becasue God takes care of his people and you are certainly one of his. You are the GREATEST Gamecock EVER!!! You and your family will be in our prayers daily. God Bless You Marcus.
Randy Tucker
Marcus, I have never been so awe struck by any individual in my life as I have been with you. God has given you a gift and you have not wasted that gift. Be it on the football field or in front of a group of young people, you are a true leader, a man of great faith and strength. My prayers go out to you and your wonderful Mother that you keep your faith and never give in or give up.
ReplyDeleteMay you recover quickly and keep your faith strong. The Lord you God is with you wherever you go. May He bless you and keep you. Thank you for your leadership and testimony.
ReplyDeleteMuch love and prayers
Great article Marty.
ReplyDeleteMarcus, I remember a devout Byrnes Rebel fan telling me years ago to keep my eye on you. He knew I was a die hard Gamecock Fan and it was rumored then that you may soon be a Gamecock. Indeed you have changed Gamecock Nation forever w/ your devotion, strength, courage and your faith in God. I hope that one day you can grasp the magnitude of how you have touched so many people. I cried tears last year on your injury, cried harder on this one. My prayers are with you and your family, and I know w/out a shadow of a doubt, we will see you breaking more records in the Garnet & Black. You are quite an inspiration!
#21, Get Well Soon! We are praying for you, your teammates and families. It has been so rewarding watching a young man like yourself to Walk the Walk and lead by example. What a great use of your talents at such a young age. There is no doubt you will be able to do anything you set your mind to do. I'd like to also say thank you to the Tennessee Vols team for their show of respect and true sportsmanship they showed at the time of you injury. I was at the game with my 6 year old son and couldn't have taught him a better life lesson about the meaning of sports and that its just a game. He had many questions about what was happening, and one of those questions he asked " Can we stop by and see Marcus Lattimore at the hospital on the way home daddy?".. Keep your head high and we will be praying for you.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all Marty, you are a better writer than you were a kicker!
ReplyDeleteSeveral touching moments Sat
1) When not only the Gamecocks but most of the Tennessee team came onto the field to pay Marcus respect
2) When Marcus stood up to get onto the cart that rolled him off the field, he was not going out lying down
3) When the TV announcers mentioned later in the broadcast, they were receiving texts from other announcers who all said Lattimore is even a better person than player.
We all hope he recovers and gets the NFL career he derserves and the financial success that comes with it, but his legacy as a Gamecock will be forever.
It isn't too soon to put 21 along side 2,37, 38 and 56 in my book
This is a great young man and a great leader on and off the field. That is why it effects so many so herd for so long. You ask why why does these things happen to such a fine outstanding young man??? So many braggards in college sports go without any issues here we see the BEST example of what a Student athlete should hurt twice. Thank you for a outstanding article . It took allday to complete i just couln't finish. Thank you.
DeleteWell said!!! I can't put into words the sadness I feel right now for Marcus, but this article has lifted me up and made me realize NOTHING can keep this young man down. As Spurrier said, he will go far and be successful, we just don't know yet in what manner or field!! Gamecock fans can never say again "Wait until next year!"
ReplyDeleteBeautifully written article Marty. Thank you for writing and expressing what all of us feel about Marcus.
ReplyDeleteMarcus,
You are such an incredible young man. Your grace and leadership on and off the field is something that we should all strive for. I'm amazed at your talent, kindness and strength. Thank you for giving your all. The Gamecocks are better because you are there.
I'm praying for a speedy recovery and that you are completely healed. You make me extra proud to be a Gamecock Fan!
Happy 21st birthday! Get well soon, my all-time favorite Gamecock! :)
Two men thought of today. Marcus, to say the least and you, Marty, a dear nephew whose way with words in this post is beyond perfect! I know your mom and dad and grandfather are so proud of the maturity of your writing and of the character you exemplify that stands near that which you described in Marcus. I know I am proud to call you my nephew. Aunt Betty and Uncle Paul
ReplyDeleteAwesome article...brought tears to my eyes. Happy Birthday Marcus! Praying for a full and speedy recovery.
ReplyDeleteDie hard Gamecock and USC Alum '04
Marcus every heart that has heard your name is broken right now. Not because of football or winning/losing games, but because the heart of such a fine young man has been wounded. God is still in control. He is not shocked or surprised. Nor is He finished with you yet. He did not bring you this far to let go of your hand. I am praying for a complete and miraculous healing. If God intends for you to play football next year or at the Pro level it will come to pass. You are truly gifted and I hope to see the beautiful site of you running the ball again, but I know God has more in store for you than carrying a ball. The ball is just the tool. But I know football is your heart's desire, so I am praying that God will allow your heart and your body to heal beyond all human possibility. You and your family are in my prayers.
ReplyDeleteI recently read an anonymous quote-"Children are great imitators. It is up to us to give them something great to imitate."
ReplyDeleteThank you, Marcus, for giving all of us someone great to imitate!
Absolutley Awesome article Marty!
ReplyDeleteMarcus,
Thank you for being the young man you are. Character, courage, bravery, powerful work ethic.. characteristics found in so few these days. I thank God for you and your willingness to be a positive role model for my 13 year old son. I have shed so many tears for you these past two days. I haven't cried since 2007 when I lost my Mom. I think of JOB in the bible and all the Lord let him go through just to prove to satan that he would remain faithful. I questioned God immediately after your second injury... Lord why him? I believe that this question was answered as I watched the nationwide outpouring of love for you. You have more of an opportunity to be a witness in this instance than if you scored 100 more touchdowns or set the NCAA rushing record. I believe there are wonderful things ahead of you... Just keep looking to Jesus... the Author and finisher of our faith.
As for many of you, it was a devastating moment when I heard the pop and saw the play before my eyes that ended this season for Marcus Lattimore. I was heart-sick like everyone around us. Tears, supportive comments and prayers were spontaneously offered for Marcus who is a one of a kind player.
ReplyDeleteMarcus doesn’t showboat when he scores, he never does “stupidness” and always does things for the right reasons. That’s what makes him stand out above the rest. He comes from a wonderful and loving family right here in the upstate. He is a great leader and role model throughout the state and is respected by teammates, Gamecock fans and opposing teams alike. We need more dedicated, solid and ethically guided players like Marcus Lattimore. I am so very proud of Marcus and will be there for him as he has been for all of us.
God has a plan for all of us and He has one for Marcus. We don’t understand it. Why Marcus and why now, on the heels of recovery from last season’s injury? Not to worry… the long range plan for Marcus is greater than what we can now see or imagine!!!! Marcus will persevere. He has made great choices and will continue down that path of greatness. I will keep Marcus close to my heart as he will always be in my thoughts and prayers.
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11
Great article for a great young man. I can only hope that my children and grandchildren can grow up to be half the man you are. God speed on your recovery.
ReplyDeleteWOW!!! That just made me cry. To have someone come to play for the Gamecocks and show the love of Christ and stand with his fellow teammates when they mess up and do runs or what ever with them. Now that is being a Leader and someone showing what team really means. It shows how much of a wonderful person you are inside. My son plays football and when he watches Marcus he tells me "Mom I want to play for Carolina and do just as good as Marcus does for the Gamecocks". Marcus, my son admires you greatly and I seen in his eyes when you were injured that hurt him big time. I just hope my son grows to be the man God calls him to be as God has called you to be. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and know he is there, even if you don't feel like he is, remember that poem "Footprints In The Sand". God has big plans for you just keep your eyes on him, pray and he will lead you in his path of life for you. God Bless Marcus. Love ya bunches... :) <3
ReplyDeleteTo marcus' mom and dad.ya'll did an outstanding job with this young man.As a parent i can only imagine the pain your going through. For Marcus,As these words are written by many you can see the lives of so many you have touched yet never met.Thank you for changing the culture in Carolina.
ReplyDeleteWow, all of these posts are incredible. I fight back tears for you and your pain every minute of the day. God has his own plan for you, don't you give up young man. Thank you Marcus.
ReplyDeleteSuccess is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life, as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.
Happy Birthday to you,
Marcus... yu are one of the greatest players we have had in a long time... I was able to watch the game but When i saw the clips and pictures of yur accident i was shocked... Yu have touched many ppl and i hope that yu will fully recover.... We need our best player back on the foot ball field..maybe not this season but maybe next...
ReplyDeleteThank you Marty for your beautiful words. Thank you Marcus for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteMarty-- Thank you for putting into words my very thoughts.
ReplyDeleteNo matter what football holds for Marcus, he'll be a winner (and leader) in LIFE!

Wow what a awesome article Marty got me emotional all over again. Can't wait to see number 21 back in that GAMECOCK uniform again. Get well soon Marcus we are praying for you daily !!!
ReplyDeleteMarty, what an outstanding and touching tribute! Clebe McClary was a Viet Nam vet who returned to the USA and his family with missing limbs and a multitude of other injuries. His men gave him a momento with the following engraved on it, " In this world of give and take, there are few men willing to give what it truly takes". Being an ex-coach I used to relate this to my players. I associated it with the effort, dedication, persistence amd hard work associated with sports and being the very best you can be. With age I have come to realize that this statement was really meant for a person's walk through life....how he acts, how he treats others, how he gives to those in need, how he leads, how he sets the correct example, how he cares, and how he is obedient to living a Godly life.....I don't know Marcus Lattimore but from the first time I saw him score a touchdown and politely and with class toss the ball back to the referee without bring any personal recognition to himself, I knew he was a special young man. Marcus walks the walk and he truly is one "who gives what it truly takes". I,too, shed a tear whenever Marcus became injured again and I pray that God will again give him the will, the strength and the ability to play again. If anyone can, it will be him; but if not, I am confident that his strong faith will lead him to another path of excellence where others will want to follow.
ReplyDeleteMarty, thanks for saying so well what we are all thinking. Marcus, you have been such a joy to watch from our stands over these last three years! Thank you for your example to all of us-- service instead of self. We suffered with you during your first injury and rehab and have been thankful to watch you play again this year. This makes your new injury all the more hurtful to everyone—it was heart breaking for all Gamecock fans. There were not many dry eyes in the stadium as you were taken away Saturday. We don’t pretend to understand why this happened again, but the Lord is good and has a plan for your life. We will keep praying for you and your family and you keep your faith!
ReplyDeleteMarcus... All of Gamecock nation is rooting and cheering for you... as they have been since Feb. 3, 2010. We all pray that God will help you through this tough time and will make you stronger, no matter what. Marty, thank you for such a wonderful article. Very well said. GO GAMECOCKS!
ReplyDeleteMarcus, you are the definition of class...We love you and do, indeed, recognize what you have done for us. Go Cocks! (and Marty, this made me cry - again!)
ReplyDeleteYou are a gift to the University of South Carolina and certainly all of Gamecock Nation. Whatever your future holds you have touched thousands. Thank you Marcus.

Mr Lattimore, you are one of the greatest to ever wear the garnet and black. Simply astounding. Just wanted to send you best wishes on a full recovery. Thanks for being an outstanding example for the little ones to follow. People like you are few and far between. May every bit of hurt you've ever been dealt be replaced with wonderful days and years ahead.
ReplyDeleteGodspeed
